The Cataract Procedure
Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed procedure in the United States. This outpatient procedure lasts only about 10 to 20 minutes. However, because extra time will be needed for preparation and recovery, you may be in the surgery center for 90 minutes or longer.
Prior to surgery, local anesthesia for sedation is used. You will be awake for the entire process. Your eye will be made numb with anesthetic eye drops to minimize any discomfort. In some cases, an EKG machine may be connected to you to monitor your vital signs during the procedure.
The procedure is performed under a powerful microscope and involves two parts: removing the cataract and inserting an artificial lens to replace the eye's natural lens.
