Inserting the New Lens
Once all the pieces of the cataract have been removed, a new specially selected replacement lens is inserted through the small incision and is carefully placed inside where the eye's original lens used to be located. The replacement lens will not change the outward appearance of your eye, but it can drastically improve your vision. These lenses are intended to last a lifetime and are made of materials like silicone and acrylic that will not irritate your eye.
After the new lens is put into place, the procedure is complete. The small incision is commonly called "self-sealing" because the eye's natural internal pressure holds the incision tightly closed, allowing the eye to heal without stitches. Your surgeon will typically place a protective shield over your eye. After a short stay in the outpatient recovery area, you will be ready to go home. You will need someone to drive you home.
Surgery usually will be done on only one eye at a time. Surgery can generally be performed on the second eye two weeks after the first eye.
